Design Iterations/ Processing – What is Processing?

Processing

For our Design Iterations unit, the outcome is to create an interactive piece that will eventually be put up in the foyer of Weymouth House using the open source software: Processing. Processing is used “..for the electronic arts, new media art, and visual design communities with the purpose of teaching the fundamentals of computer programming in a visual context, and to serve as the foundation for electronic sketchbooks”.
For the first workshop we learnt the basic language, what code does what etc. and eventually created a basic but responsive piece.

The two main fundamental points of processing code are “void setup(){}” and “void draw (){}”, Void Setup creates the background information, in basic terms it lays out the foundations of the sketch, such as the size, background colour and frame rate. Void Draw creates functions and conditions for the sketch, the code above creates random coloured lines on the location of the mouse point and I am going to show what the code above creates.

I like the idea of Processing, it seems very open and gives me the opportunity to explore different interactive designs and seeing some of the more experienced designers that use it and their eventual outcome, it seems a very interesting piece of software.
